Overview

The Long-term Scenarios for the Clean Transition (LTES) Initiative, formerly known as the LTES Campaign, aims to promote the improved use of long-term model-based energy scenarios to support and accelerate the energy transition among CEM countries.

The initiative is co-led by the Danish and German governments and supported by additional country members and technical partners, while IRENA executes the initiative as the operating agent.

Launched at the Ninth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM9) in May 2018 in Copenhagen as a CEM campaign, it was agreed in 2021 by CEM, Germany, Denmark, and IRENA to upgrade it to the LTES Initiative to make it a long-term workstream with broadened activities.

Goals

The LTES Initiative seeks to promote the improved use of long-term model-based energy scenarios by:

  • sharing country experience in the use and benefits of long-term energy scenario modelling for national and regional policy planning
  • showcasing innovative scenario approaches and modelling methods for addressing clean energy transition features
  • and identifying channels to build and enhance national capacity for clean energy transition planning and to share with countries with limited experience.
Key Activities

1. Organization of a series of events gathering experts from around the world to promote bilateral and multilateral exchanges involving different types of stakeholders.

Since May 2018, the LTES Initiative has organised over 30 workshops, side events and webinars to exchange experiences and good practices regarding the development and use of long-term energy scenarios that support the clean energy transition. The discussions at these events have touched upon a broad range of topics, from the institutional use of long-term energy scenarios to advanced modelling techniques that capture the complexities of the energy system. The workshops cater to the needs and interests of participating countries and partner organizations while benefiting all international participants, in line with the scope and focus of the initiative. The International Forum on Long-term Energy Scenarios is the LTES Initiatives, yearly flagship event.

2. Publication of analytical reports that support and strengthen the outcome of these workshops.

Based on the findings that have emerged from the events and discussions with governments and technical institutions worldwide, these reports include the collection of experience and good practices oriented towards an improved use of long-term scenarios to guide the clean energy transition.
