Transformers
During the process of transporting electricity from a power plant to your home or business, a great deal of energy is wasted in the form of heat. Electrical power distribution systems—which actually deliver electricity to its final destination—are responsible for nearly nine percent of total electricity waste globally. Distribution transformers are responsible for up to 35 percent of these energy losses.
Preliminary SEAD Initiative analysis found that increasing the efficiency of transformers in SEAD economies could, by 2030, save 75 TWh of final energy per year. These savings would avoid the need for approximately 25 medium-sized power plants and reduce annual CO2 emissions by 30 million tons.
To date, nearly 30 economies around the world have developed minimum efficiency standards or labeling programs for transformers.
