Announcing Winners of the 2019 Global Leadership Awards in Energy Management

The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), a high-level international forum for promoting clean energy, is pleased to present its 2019 Energy Management Leadership Awards to 32 organizations for both using and promoting effective energy management systems (EnMS). On 29 May 2019, four companies will receive top honours during the tenth CEM meeting in Vancouver, Canada. The Award of Excellence in Energy Management will be formally presented to representatives of the 3M (Global), Areej Vegetable Oil & Derivatives (Oman), JK Tyre & Industries Ltd. (India), and PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (Indonesia). The CEM also congratulates the 28 other organizations (listed below) that earned the Energy Management Insight Award for raising global awareness of energy management and its benefits.

The CEM awards programme highlights the clear energy, environmental, and business benefits achieved by the diverse types of organizations that invest in energy efficiency. The 2019 class of awardees includes organizations at both ends of the spectrum in energy management experience—from single facilities to enterprise-wide platforms–showing that all organizations can use the ISO 50001 energy management system standard to advantage. Collectively, all 32 of these organizations (with facilities in 19 countries or economies) report annual energy cost savings of up to USD 57 million and emissions reductions of up to 554 million metric tons of carbon dioxide—the equivalent of taking seven million passenger vehicles off the road.

Industrial energy use accounts for roughly one-third of global energy demand. While there is significant potential to decrease energy consumption in this sector, opportunities to improve energy efficiency are still unexploited,” said Christian Zinglersen, head of the CEM Secretariat. “This is why it is absolutely crucial to recognise those who have introduced robust energy management systems and proved that energy efficiency is not only compatible but can also drive profitable business development.”

To qualify for these awards, one or more facilities within each organization established an energy management system and had it certified to the global ISO 50001 standard; summarized the process and resulting benefits; and submitted a structured case study for analysis. Winners are selected by an independent panel of international experts.

The Award of Excellence in Energy Management recognizes efforts to transform the way organizations use energy. Details about this year’s top winners:

3M expanded its ISO 50001 expertise and certification from two initial plants in 2011 (pilot study) to 30 sites in seven countries as part of its global enterprise model. Over three years, the 30 sites improved their collective energy performance by 4.5%—reducing energy use by more than 1.9 million gigajoules (GJ), cutting emissions by 330,000 tons (carbon dioxide equivalent) and lowering energy costs by USD 13.5 million.
Areej Vegetable Oils & Derivatives, the first company in Oman to achieve ISO 50001 certification, used its ISO 50001-certified EnMS to reduce natural gas use 23% and electricity use 11% over a one-year performance period. The plant installed energy meters; trained and engaged staff members; made simple changes in daily operations; and installed more energy-efficient motors, pumps, and variable frequency drives.
JK Tyre & Industries Ltd. of India saved nearly USD 1.8 million over a six-year period as its Chennai Plant gained certification and recertification to ISO 50001. By identifying the pieces of equipment that use the most energy, the plant prioritized opportunities for energy savings. In addition to using more renewable energy, the plant installed devices that alert staff to even slight increases in energy use and upgraded multiple systems to reduce both energy and water demand.
PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur in Indonesia has certified two plants to ISO 50001. As the largest fertilizer corporation in Southeast Asia, the company supplies more than six million tons of product to domestic and foreign markets. The EnMS system led the state-owned company to upgrade operations and equipment at the two plants to save more than 866,000 GJ and USD 3.9 million in energy costs. An internal award for energy-saving innovations has led to two patents.

The ISO 50001 standard is a cost-effective framework that enables organizations to take control of their energy use and continually reduce costs and emissions. Regardless of an organization’s size or sector, this framework helps maintain and build energy and cost savings year after year. ISO 50001 is a product of international collaboration, drawing on best practices that have led to impressive savings in over 50 countries. The standard is proven to be business-friendly, globally relevant, and transformational, as it embeds best practices into any organization and provides a global benchmark for clean energy action.

“UNIDO congratulates the top-performing companies of the Energy Management Leadership Awards programme, who have demonstrated how implementing ISO 50001 has delivered a diverse set of benefits to their companies,” said Philippe Scholtes, Managing Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). “We have seen that energy management systems unlock energy savings beyond those from technology replacement or process upgrades whilst enhancing productivity, environmental compliance, competitiveness and job creation. We also encourage the winning organizations and other companies to commit to the CEM Energy Management Campaign to promote ISO 50001 globally.”

The Energy Management Leadership Awards are organized by the CEM Energy Management Working Group (EMWG), which includes representatives from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, and the United States. UNIDO serves as the Operating Agent for the EMWG, which was launched in 2010 by the CEM and International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation.
