Quality Assurance Framework for Mini-Grids

The Clean Energy Ministerial’s Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (Global LEAP) teamed with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory to develop a Quality Assurance Framework for isolated minigrids (QAF-Minigrids). QAF-Minigrids addresses some key challenges to providing safe, high-quality, and affordable power to remote customers, focusing on two key frameworks: Level of Service Framework and Accountability and Performance Reporting Framework. The global market for off-grid appliances is poised for rapid and significant growth, according to market research sponsored by the Clean Energy Ministerial's Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (Global LEAP). According to The State of the Global Off-Grid Appliance Market, Global LEAP’s new study, growth in clean energy access markets and the global off-grid appliance market are inextricably linked, and success in applications such as off-grid LED lighting provides a “springboard” for expanded focus on emerging off-grid energy service technologies. Energy4Access Coalition Year of Action 2016

At the COP21 climate negotiations in Paris, the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) announced the launch of the Efficiency for Access (E4A) Coalition, a new collaborative effort between the CEM’s Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (Global LEAP) and Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) to accelerate universal access to energy. In coordination with the coalition’s launch, E4A released its 2016 Framework for Action, which outlines E4A’s vision and steps for the coming year towards the overarching goal of deploying super-efficient technologies to enable universal access to enhanced energy services by 2030.

Powering a Home with Just 25 Watts of Solar PV

Super-Efficient Appliances Can Enable Expanded Off-Grid Energy Service Using Small Solar Power Systems

Analysis commissioned by the Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (Global LEAP) initiative reveals that highly efficient direct current (DC) appliances have the potential to dramatically increase the affordability of off-grid solar power systems used for rural electrification in developing countries by reducing the size of the systems required. When super-efficient appliances are used in off-grid solar power systems, the total cost of providing off-grid electricity services can be reduced by as much as 50%.

This document presents the results of a Global LEAP survey of energy access professionals, reporting on the appliance products that they think are likely to inspire the greatest off-grid consumer demand over the next 3 to 5 years, and the appliances that they think are likely to drive the greatest energy access (e.g., socioeconomic or environmental) benefits. Survey respondents ranked LED room lighting appliances as the top appliance driving off-grid consumer demand, and the top product driving the energy access benefits.

Promoting Energy Access through a Quality Assurance Framework for Isolated Mini-Grids

The Global LEAP initiative is supporting the development of a quality assurance framework for isolated mini-grids that will address both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) mini-grids and be applicable to renewable, fossil-fuel, and hybrid systems. It will define standard technical categories and uniform operational elements for mini-grids, and it will preserve flexibility by accounting for the different levels of service that are appropriate for different tiers of end-user needs.
