Solutions Center Report Reviews International Experiences in Wheeling and Banking Strategies

Report offers insights for regulators and policy makers working to achieve renewable energy goals

The Clean Energy Regulators Initiative (CERI) has released a new report, Wheeling and Banking Strategies for Optimal Renewable Energy Deployment: International Experiences. CERI is a partnership between two Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) initiatives, the Clean Energy Solutions Center and 21st Century Power Partnership, and Leonardo Energy. As variable renewable generation increases worldwide, policy makers and regulators are adopting new or revised wheeling and banking policies that could effectively support renewable development. The report defines the principles of wheeling (transmission) tariffs and renewable energy banking provisions and their role in renewable energy deployment in countries with plans for large-scale renewable energy.

Malaysia Establishes Feed-in Tariffs to Accelerate Renewable Energy Deployment

Clean Energy Solutions Center facilitates collaboration to develop and implement supportive policies

Malaysia has taken steps to further clean energy deployment by mandating adoption of a renewable energy feed-in tariff (FiT) mechanism under the country’s 2011 Renewable Energy Act. The Malaysian Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) and the Clean Energy Regulators Initiative (CERI) are working together to enable FiT implementation and renewable energy development, with CERI supporting SEDA’s efforts to review and improve FiTs for solar photovoltaic (PV), bioenergy, small hydropower, and geothermal energy resources and technologies. The Clean Energy Ministerial’s (CEM’s) Clean Energy Solutions Center Ask an Expect service facilitated the SEDA-CERI partnership.

The Clean Energy Ministerial Highlighted at COP21

The 21st United Nations climate conference (COP21) in Paris brought the world together in an effort to tackle climate change and set the world on a low-carbon pathway. With a successful outcome and a historic agreement reached, the focus now shifts to the “road from Paris.” One of the most crucial solutions to climate change is a global transition to clean energy, making the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) more important and more relevant than ever. Several events at COP21 featured the role of the CEM as an implementation forum and highlighted results from CEM initiatives. New CEM campaigns were also launched to raise the visibility and direct much-needed resources to targeted areas that have particular potential for impact.
