Overview
Countries and organizations are looking for strategies to reduce energy and carbon emissions and a strategic approach to energy management has demonstrated value. Energy efficiency is the least expensive, most quickly deployable, and cleanest of all energy resources.
ISO 50001 Energy management systems – requirements with guidance for use (or simply ‘’ISO 50001’’) is the international energy management standard that represents the efforts of over 50 countries from around the world to develop an international best practice to help organizations better manage energy.
CEM’s Energy Management Leadership Awards are designed to highlight the clear, environmental, energy, and business benefits achieved by diverse types of organizations that invest in energy efficiency—and to showcase leading organizations’ successes in using ISO 50001.
To qualify for these awards, organizations prepare case studies to share a high-quality and replicable description of their ISO 50001 implementation and certification, resulting business benefits, and useful advice on lessons learned and keys to success.
An independent panel of international energy management experts evaluates the entries to determine the winners.

CHANGSHIN INC Indonesia Factory: CHANGSHIN INC is a specialized Nike footwear manufacturing company that was founded in 1981. CHANHSHIN INC has established off-shore factories in Vietnam, China, and Indonesia. These sites comprise numerous facilities that collectively cover the entire footwear manufacturing process, resulting in significant energy costs. In an increasingly competitive global marketplace, an energy management system allows the company to operate sustainably, lowering resource consumption and utility costs, and to offer eco-friendly products, maintaining a competitive edge. Company leadership understands the role of energy performance in preserving environmental sustainability, both now and in the future, and has made energy efficiency a pillar of CHANGSHIN INC’s Sustainability Vision. In response, CHANGSHIN INC Indonesia Factory established a structured energy team to implement an energy management system following the ISO 50001 framework. The team uses the latest technology—a factory energy monitoring system—to monitor electricity consumption and power quality at every electrical panel meter across several buildings. Team members analyze the results, identify energy usage anomalies, and seek energy savings opportunities. These opportunities are evaluated and prioritized based on return on investment, implementation time, and impact on reducing energy; top projects are listed in the company’s energy and carbon reduction plans. In addition, the company has established the Kaizen Award program, which encourages employees to contribute ideas for energy savings in their respective work areas and rewards the team that contributes the most to energy savings. CHANGSHIN INC Indonesia Factory successfully achieved a 13% improvement between 2021 and 2023, reduced energy use by 11,720 MWhe, saved $808,382 (USD) in energy costs, and successfully reduced carbon emissions.
U.S. Air Force Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex: The Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex (OC-ALC) is the first U.S. government organization certified to ISO 50001. The complex maintains military aircraft for the U.S. Air Force. In 2015, the Air Force Sustainment Center (AFSC, the OC-ALC’s parent organization)—recognizing the imperative of energy resilience for operations to U.S. national security—mandated ISO 50001 certification for the three maintenance complexes. Smart meters were installed to track energy consumption, and data from the meters were used to assess the energy performance of facilities and major equipment. The OC-ALC energy team used the results to identify significant energy users—as well as aging infrastructure and inefficient equipment. The team then identified and prioritized energy retrofit projects (e.g., replacing an old high-pressure gas distribution system and centralized steam plant with distributed steam boilers). The team also implemented low- and no-cost energy savings approaches that did not require new equipment. The OC-ALC took advantage of an energy savings performance contract (ESPC) financing mechanism and integrated energy management system implementation into the ESPC. As a result, the ISO 50001 efforts were covered by the energy cost savings from the ESPC energy performance improvement projects; the OC-ALC saw no front-end costs. Since the energy management system’s introduction, the OC-ALC has seen 35% energy performance improvement, which translates into energy savings of 1,461,283 MWh, energy cost savings of $66.4 million, and CO2-e emissions reduction of 289,160 metric tons. After the OC-ALC’s successful implementation, the AFSC’s other two maintenance complexes were also ISO 50001 certified.

Abastible S.A., an energy solutions market leader, implemented its first EnMS at the Lenga plant, one of the company’s main facilities, with the goal of reducing energy intensity 1% each year, year over year. The company also developed an innovative savings and emissions reduction service that uses Blockchain technology to provide stakeholders with transparency about energy savings methods and emissions reductions achieved—7,870 kilograms of CO2 equivalent in one year.
Dubai Municipality has jurisdiction over city services and the upkeep of facilities in the emirate of Dubai. The municipality has several office buildings that are intermittently occupied, presenting an opportunity to decrease energy use. Energy reduction approaches focused on controlling the HVAC, a dominant energy consumer, and converting lighting systems to LEDs. Since the energy management system’s launch in 2012, the projects have saved over 20,000 gigajoules of energy and USD 688,903 in energy costs.
JW Marriott Washington, DC, a luxury hotel that is part of the Marriott International, Inc., chain, first achieved ISO 50001 in 2013 and was recertified in 2016. Top management are directly involved in monitoring data provided through the EnMS to gauge energy use and make adjustments to ensure progress. Management also appointed a hotel energy team that incorporates representatives from all major departments, ensuring a holistic and inclusive approach that has saved over 9,500 gigajoules of energy and USD 221,551 of energy costs over three years.
Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, a 36-hole standard tournament golf course, established an ISO 50001 EnMS in 2013 and, since then, has reduced electricity consumption by 22% and LPG consumption by 54%, with associated energy cost savings of USD 1,428,565. Operational adjustments account for most of these savings, but the club has also undertaken significant projects such as installing heat pump technology and replacing a gas-based hot water system. 3M expanded its ISO 50001 expertise and certification from two initial plants in 2011 (pilot study) to 30 sites in seven countries as part of its global enterprise model. Over three years, the 30 sites improved their collective energy performance by 4.5%—reducing energy use by more than 1.9 million GJ, cutting emissions by 330,000 tons (carbon dioxide equivalent), and lowering energy costs by USD 13.5 million.
Areej Vegetable Oils & Derivatives S.A.O.C (AVOD), the first company in Oman to achieve ISO 50001 certification, used its ISO 50001-certified EnMS to reduce natural gas use 23% and electricity use 11% over a one-year performance period. The plant installed energy meters; trained and engaged staff members; made simple changes in daily operations; and installed more energy efficient motors, pumps, and variable frequency drives.
JK Tyre & Industries, Ltd. of India saved nearly USD 1.8 million over a six-year period as its Chennai Plant gained certification and recertification to ISO 50001. By identifying the pieces of equipment that use the most energy, the plant prioritized opportunities for energy savings. In addition to using more renewable energy, the plant installed devices that alert staff to even slight increases in energy use and upgraded multiple systems to reduce both energy and water demand.
PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur in Indonesia has certified two plants to ISO 50001. As the largest fertilizer company in Southeast Asia, the company supplies more than six million tons of product to domestic and foreign markets. The EnMS system led the state-owned company to upgrade operations and equipment at the two plants to save more than 866,000 GJ and USD 3.9 million in energy costs. An internal award for energy-saving innovations has led to two patents.
