CEM’s Advanced Cooling Challenge Recruited $1.4 billion in Investments to Promote Efficient Cooling Technology

Since its launch one year ago, the Advanced Cooling Challenge has recruited 26 commitments & $1.4 billion in investments from national governments, and global leading manufacturers, institutions, & NGOs

Today, at the eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8), the Advanced Cooling Challenge (ACC) announced that it has recruited 26 commitments and $USD 1.4 billion of investments towards developing and deploying energy-efficient air conditioners that use low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants.

Voltas, Blue Star, Godrej, Daikin, Whirlpool, and Panasonic endorse the Clean Energy Ministerial's climate-friendly Advanced Cooling Challenge

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) hosted a day-long workshop to deliberate on a strategy for super-efficient cooling systems. As a result, leading manufacturers such as Voltas, Blue Star, Godrej, Daikin, Whirlpool, and Panasonic pledged their support to develop and deploy super-efficient cooling systems in their complexes and facilities. They also endorsed the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Advanced Cooling (AC) Challenge.

In a warmer, richer world, the demand for air conditioning will skyrocket. However, improving the average efficiency of air conditioners sold in 2030 by 30% compared to today’s models would reduce emissions of CO2 by up to 25 billion metric tons over the lifetime of the equipment. The Clean Energy Ministerial launched the Advanced Cooling Challenge to inspire governments and industry to make, sell, promote, and install super-efficient air conditioner or cooling solutions that are smart, climate friendly, and affordable.

A side event on energy efficiency at COP22 in Marrakesh, Morocco, highlighted United for Efficiency (U4E), the GIZ Green Cooling Initiative, and the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Advanced Cooling Challenge. “What do Nationally Determined Contributions Need to Succeed? Energy Efficiency” showcased initiatives and resources countries can use to scale up their energy efficiency ambitions to achieve their nationally determined contributions in line with the Paris climate accord.
